Summer of Soccer | Callens' Peru Reach Copa America Semifinals

sos update internationals

While New York City FC has been holding down the fort here in the Big Apple, three Internationals: Sean Johnson, Ronald Matarrita, and Alex Callens, have been doing their thing all around the world.

As the CONCACAF Gold Cup and Copa America tournaments are nearing the end, here's how our boys have been fairing in their campaigns for international glory...

Sean Johnson

Sean Johnson and the US Men's National Team are headed to the Gold Cup Quarterfinal to take on Curacao. The team has recorded three shutout wins to get to this point of the tournament, defeating Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Panama.

After serving as Zack Steffen's backup, Johnson was called on by Gregg Berhalter to make his first start of the Gold Cup against Panama. The keeper earned a clean sheet as the team went on to defeat the Panamanian side 1-0.

The USMNT will be taking the pitch on Sunday to try to advance to the Semifinal at 8.30pm ET. Join us for the Watch Party at The Brewery in Queens - visit NYCFC.com/SummerOfSoccer for more.

Ronald Matarrita

Ronald Matarrita and the Costa Rican National Team also made it to the last eight of the tournament after defeating Nicaragua and Bermuda and Matarrita appeared in two of the Gold Cup matches.

Unfortunately, the NYCFC man was an unused substitute as the Costa Rican side was knocked out of the tournament in the Quarterfinal match against Mexico on penalties last night in Houston.

Alex Callens

Meanwhile, Alex Callens and the Peruvian National Team are headed to the Semifinals of the Copa America where they will face off against Chile.

Peru defeated Bolivia, drew against Venezuela, and lost to Brazil to advance to the Quarterfinal match, where they took on Uruguay.

The team maintained a scoreless draw throughout the match, leading to a penalty shootout which Peru took 5-4.

As the team heads to the Semifinal, they face a tough challenge vs. Chile who defeated Colombia, to make it this far. The winner of the match will advance to the Final and face either Argentina or Brazil.

Although our man Alex Callens has yet to take to the field, he'll be ready if called upon as Peru chase a third Copa America title.
