Gold Cup: Camargo Flies Flag for NYCFC

Costa Rica's Rodney Wallace and Panama's Miguel Camargo were expected to face off on Wednesday night at the Gold Cup.

However, a right abductor strain suffered in training has ended Wallace's Gold Cup campaign early and so Camargo is NYCFC's last man standing at the competition.

Panama finished behind the United States in Group B and this will be the first time the nations have ever met at the Gold Cup.

Los Ticos smacked French Guiana 3-0 in the final match of the group stage, with Wallace scoring his side's second goal in the 79th minute.

Camargo got himself on the scoresheet as well, picking up an assist in his squad's final group stage match, a 3-0 win over Martinique. The win eased them into the knockout rounds of the cup, providing some much-needed momentum for a side looking to make their first run to the finals since 2013.

With both teams fielding mostly full-strength lineups during this tournament, there are obvious World Cup implications for these countries as the last set of qualifiers loom. Costa Rica currently sits in second place, while Panama is in fourth, and currently on the outside looking in. You can bet there will be a little extra something in this match as players try to prove to their coaches that they can be difference-makers for their national team when a trip to Russia next summer is on the line.

Camargo has already managed to put his stamp on this tournament for Panama, scoring a goal in their opening match against the USA and adding an assist in each of their following group stage matches. If he can continue his form and help put Panama put together a run through the knockout stage, he stands in prime position to become a key player as Panama look to qualify for their first-ever World Cup this autumn.

You can watch the game at 6:00 PM ET on Fox Sports 1 this Wednesday.
