David Villa Named Alcatel MLS Player of the Week

MLS POTW Villa

David Villa was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 16thweek of the 2017 MLS season.

It’s the third time Villa has taken the weekly honors and the first time since June 2015.

El Guaje takes the award thanks to his two-goal effort in NYCFC’s 2-1 comeback win over Seattle on Saturday – a tally which included his landmark 50th goal for the club.

The 50th came from the penalty spot and was the equalizer after David was fouled, while the game-winner was his 51st, a sublime volley from a Jack Harrison cross.

The goal which completed his brace was Villa’s 10th of the season which puts him second in the race for the MLS Golden Boot behind Nemanja Nikolic.

“I’m happy to make history for our club,” Villa reflected after the game, “Of course the goals are good for me but they’re good for the club.

“I think that a lot of these goals gave points to NYCFC and gave good memories and moments which is the most important thing – I’m working for the fans, for the club.”

David is the second NYCFC player to win the MLS Player of the Week award in 2017, following Harrison who took the honor at the beginning of May for his performance against Columbus Crew SC.

NYCFC next plays the New York Red Bulls in Heineken Rivalry Week action on Saturday, June 24 at Red Bull Arena (1:30 p.m. ET, FOX/FOX Deportes).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.

Everyone at NYCFC would like to congratulate David on winning this latest award.
