Spotlight on Villa vs Seattle

Spotlight: David Villa vs. Seattle Sounders

NYCFC bounced back from their US Open Cup defeat to Red Bulls with a thrilling comeback win over Seattle on Saturday afternoon.

Down to Cristian Roldan’s 41st minute opener amid crazy conditions at a rain-soaked Yankee Stadium, a reaction was required and it was delivered, thanks in no small part to the captain.

Winning the penalty, which he converted emphatically for his 50th goal for the club, David Villa was an influential figure throughout this victory over the reigning MLS Champions.

A constant source of discomfort for the Sounders defense with his intelligent movement and fleet-footed interplay with his fellow forwards, Villa came up with the big moment when it mattered to complete a second comeback win in the Bronx in as many games…

Key Moment

As far as one-twos go, this one was unconventional but devastatingly effective.

Laying the ball off to Jack Harrison, Villa’s run to the back post went unchecked, allowing him to ghost in when his English teammate was finally able to curl his perfect cross in around the back of the defense.

With the angle against him, a lesser striker would have fired this volley straight at the goalkeeper or over the bar, but David had the composure to open up his body and sidefoot around Stefan Frei for the game-winner.

It was a beautiful goal which showcased Villa’s cold-blooded composure in front of goal and it earned his team the three points.

In David’s Words…

“I’m happy to make history for our club,” Villa reflected, “Of course the goals are good for me but they’re good for the club.

“I think that a lot of these goals gave points to NYCFC and gave good memories and moments which is the most important thing – I’m working for the fans, for the club.”

In Patrick’s Words…

"To be honest I'm not surprised," Vieira said, "Because you have to look at David's career and what he has achieved. It is not easy to be the top goalscorer in Spain's history, it's not easy to win the Champions League and the World Cup.

"That talent is always going to be there."
