New York City Football Club welcome Columbus Crew to Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

For this edition of 'The Away End' presented by Berkeley College & Rennert International, we spoke to Kaitlin Francis, Social Media Content Coordinator for the Nordecke.

Hi Kaitlin, thanks for speaking with us. How long have you been a fan of the Crew?
Casually, been a fan of the team for about 6 years; since 2017. That season was when I first noticed the team, if you can believe it, because I thought the away black checkered jersey was hot. I'd only really checked scores every now and then back in those days. But the Save the Crew movement changed that. The Crew was everywhere in Columbus. My first in person game was the last game at Historic Crew Stadium as a birthday present and I dove into the deep end pretty quickly after that. I fell in love with the intensity of the Nordecke (Supporters Section) and haven't looked back since then.

What has been your highlight in that time?
Riding with NoronTour to my first Hell is Real Derby against FC Cincinnati. I had never 'traveled' with a supporters group before, for any sport or team. The Nordecke is one big MASSIVE family and to be welcomed by them as a \young\ fan, relatively, is amazing to me. I felt I found my family.

What are your thoughts on the team’s start to the season?
The Crew are having an amazing season if you ask me. We may not be at the top of the table but Coach Nancy is exactly what we needed. I believe he truly understands what it will take to get us to another MLS Cup victory. He is building a foundation that's going to last for years to come.

What are your hopes for the 2023 season?
While I love the excitement of 'come from behind victories,' I want to see us plant the foot down, early on. I want total and complete confidence that we will win. More victories, fewer ties.

What do you think will be the deciding factor in Saturday’s game?
Applying pressure early on and maintaining momentum in a smart way. Simple mistakes could cost us.

And for anyone that may be in Columbus in the near future for a game, what would you suggest they check out beforehand?
Come down early and find the gemstones in the city that the locals love but are hesitant to share with strangers.

  • Jennings Java for coffee
  • Saucy Brew Works pizza for lunch
  • CRMD Crew Ice Cream for dessert
  • Take a walk in Goodale Park
  • Pop over to Whistle and Keg for pre-game and definitely check out the Supporters HQ in the north lot above Lower.com Field for tailgating fun before the game.
