Spotlight on Yangel

It was his work on the practice pitch that earned Yangel Herrera his first Major League Soccer start Saturday night. And the 19-year-old took his chance with both hands, playing an influential role in New York City FC’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over Columbus Crew SC.

Key Moment...

Herrera, who partnered with Alex Ring and Maxi Moralez in the center of NYCFC’s midfield, opened his MLS account in the 64th minute, bravely nodding in a Ben Sweat cross just outside of the six-yard box before clashing heads with Columbus defender Jukka Raitala.

Herrera then pressured a square ball at the top of the Columbus 18-yard box before tapping to Jack Harrison for the winner 12 minutes later.

“I feel super happy for the game we had and the three points we managed to get over here as visitors. We’re going home really happy and really calm. Thank God for the confidence the coach had to start me today. We’re going home really excited. Thank God we had a great game. The team and I are going to continue the victory and we’re going to keep working to stay on top.”

“I think the characteristics of the players are different - when you want to be a bit more solid defensively, this is why I choose Yangel,” Vieira said. “There will be a time when we have more possession that I will want players to create and to help to build up from the back and then I will go with Andrea."
