Spotlight: Rodney Wallace vs. DC United

Spotlight Rodney Wallace

You never forget your first…

Rodney Wallace made a big impression on his home debut for NYCFC in the 4-0 win over DC United.

The Costa Rican international arrived from Sport Recife in Brazil late on in preseason but he showcased his potential with a huge contribution.

Scoring his new team’s first goal of the season, he then went on to set up David Villa’s first goal with a cross which the captain headed past Bill Hamid in the DC goal.

On top of these two moments, Wallace’s interplay with Jack Harrison, Ronald Matarrita, Maxi Moralez and Jack Harrison was exceptional, signposting the start of something special for NYCFC and their new left winger.

Rodney said…

“I thought we had a complete game. From the front three right back to the defense and goalkeeper, we followed our gameplan very well to get the three points.

“Today was the start of something good – we’ve been working really hard on our triangles and our relationships and today we showed what we could do. We set a high standard for ourselves but we have the potential to get better.

“I had a short preseason so I believe I’m still getting to my top shape. I’m taking it week by week and game by game but it was a good game for me. I have a long way to go but I’m just focusing on getting stronger and fitter and better.”

In Patrick’s Words…

“It was important for us to improve our team and that’s why we brought in these new players. When the team performs like we did today, it’s easier for the players to express their talent.

“Rodney had a really good game, knowing that he didn’t play a lot in the last three months and he’s not 100% fit but he will be an important player for us.”

Key Moment…

NYCFC huffed and puffed but they just couldn’t blow Orlando’s house down in Florida on week one.

This time, they took just seven minutes to net the first goal on Etihad Pitch in 2017.

Wallace was the man who provided it, reacting first when Harrison’s shot cannoned back off the underside of the crossbar.

He didn’t have much time to readjust and turn the ball home but he showed great athleticism and balance to power in his acrobatic volley.
