New York City FC (NYCFC) today announced that it has acquired Midfielder Andrés Perea from the Philadelphia Union via trade in exchange for $650,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM). The Union will receive $350,000 in GAM in 2024 and $300,000 GAM in 2025, plus an additional $150,000 GAM in performance-based incentives.

The 23-year-old joins New York City FC on a permanent basis, having played for the Club on loan last season. Joining in July 2023 as a summer reinforcement, the Colombian made 10 appearances for New York City FC in Major League Soccer, adding one goal to his name.

“Bringing Andrés back to the Club on a permanent basis was one of our key priorities, so we are delighted he returns for the start of preseason,” Sporting Director David Lee said. “Andrés made a big impression with his performances on the pitch but also how quickly he assimilated into the group and what he brought to the team off the pitch and in the locker room. He is the type of character we wanted to add this offseason and his familiarity with our players, staff and style of play should help his transition this year.

“He brings different attributes to our midfield with his dynamism and ability to cover ground both offensively and defensively that will complement our squad and give us more competitiveness and depth in midfield as we play across multiple competitions in 2024. He is a very talented player with an excellent mentality, who also still has room to develop and improve and we are looking forward to the impact he will have for our team in the years to come.”

Joining after the conclusion of Leagues Cup in 2023, Perea quickly became a staple in Coach Cushing’s midfield as the team pushed for a playoff spot. The midfielder went on to be featured in the starting XI eight times out of the final 10 games of the season. Perea also played all 90 minutes in the post-season friendly win against Inter Miami CF on Noche D’Or.

“I am thrilled to be returning to New York. Ever since my first day, I was welcomed with open arms and immediately felt at home,” Midfielder Andrés Perea said. “Although we didn’t finish the season as we would have wanted, I am ready to work hard and give it my all every day to continue to improve and help this squad get to where it belongs. I am extremely excited to rejoin my teammates and start the season the same way we ended in 2023. I am looking forward to playing in front of the passionate New York City fans and hope to give them a reason to cheer this season and beyond.”
