Match Recap

New York City Football Club knew a Hudson River Derby stood between them and a place in the next round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Interim Head Coach Nick Cushing made three changes to the team that took on Colorado Rapids at the weekend, with Maxime Chanot, Gabriel Periera, and Thiago Andrade entering for Thiago Martins, Maxi Moralez, and Talles Magno.

The game started at a quick pace and saw NYCFC fashion some early opportunities through quick transitions – one such opportunity seeing Taty Castellanos ask for a penalty for a shove in the back that was not given.

Both teams were keen to show their determination when it came to duels, and that saw the referee choose to issue several yellow cards early on.

In the 42nd minute, the Red Bulls produced their best chance of the half when some pinball in the box allowed Jon Tolkin to fire off a shot that bounced wide.

On the stroke of halftime, a powerful run by Tayvon Gray allowed him to play Pereira in behind. The Brazilian drove at goal and only narrowly missed Carlos Coronel’s goal.

The second half began with an early chance for Castellanos when Chanot found him with a long diagonal pass – the forward’s effort testing Coronel.

Red Bulls took the lead in the 52nd minute from a freekick that found Lewis Morgan free in the box to convert from close range.

In the 62nd minute, NYCFC were reduced to 10 men when Thiago Andrade had an off the ball clash and was shown a straight red card.

Cushing turned to his bench in the wake of that dismissal and introduced Maxi Moralez and Talles Magno for Santiago Rodríguez and Pereira.

Red Bulls claimed their second of the game in the 70th minute after Luquinhas pounced on a loose ball in the box to convert. In the 73rd minute Chris Gloster subbed into the game for Malte Amundsen.

NYCFC continued to push for a route back into the game and despite being a man down were able to exert some control over possession.

In the 82nd minute, a good cross by Gloster landed on the foot of Talles Magno, but no NYCFC player could put their foot on it to get a shot away. The Red Bulls would add a third in injury time through Omir Fernandez.

That confirmed a 3-0 win for Red Bulls and NYCFC's exit from the competition.
