Keys To The Match | Recharged

New York City Football Club are back on home soil on Saturday night, welcoming Philadelphia Union to Citi Field.

The Boys in Blue return to action in a 7:30pm ET kick-off in Queens, looking to continue our impressive home form.

Here are the Keys to the Match, presented by Ford…

Reset

It has been more than a month since the City Boys last stepped out on New York turf, and Nick Cushing’s side will return to the World’s Borough ready and raring to go.

A bye this past weekend afforded the team a much-needed break and welcome rest, following a heavy run on the road, with players and staff able to switch off – both mentally and physically – to recharge the batteries.

The team had the chance to press the reset button after what had been a demanding period, and – on the back of a positive result in Orlando – could enjoy their downtime with an optimistic outlook of better times to come.

Home Comforts

City have enjoyed an excellent start to our home campaign in 2023.

Tallying 4-0-1 at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium, NYCFC have picked up 13 points from a possible 15 in front of our own fans, and will look to continue that fine record in the first of a three-game home stand this weekend, eager to build some momentum.

Gabe Segal’s late leveler in Florida handed the squad a major confidence boost, as well as a crucial point, and the Boys in Blue will hope to build on that moment to ensure it proves to be a major turning point in the season.

Familiar Foe

This will be the 21st overall meeting between New York and Philadelphia, with City winning 10 and drawing two of those encounters.

Philly had the upper hand in 2022, victorious both home and away in regular season action, before booking their place in the MLS Cup Final with a win in October’s playoff clash.

The Union are unbeaten in their last six league games, claiming 13 points from 15 in their last five matches.

With six goals and seven assists to his name in his 12 appearances, City will be wary of dangerman Dániel Gazdag, while Julián Carranza and Mikael Uhre have also found the net on five occasions so far in 2023.

Meanwhile, Cushing will hope to have a strong roster to choose from – with only Alfredo Morales missing from the trip to Exploria Stadium – and will share the latest team news on Thursday ahead of the game.
