A narrow 1-0 defeat ended Venezuela’s bid for the U20 World Cup at the hands of England in Sunday’s final.

However, the on-loan NYCFC midfielder was recognized for his excellent performances in the tournament as he took home the Bronze Ball award.

Awarded to the third best player in the tournament, Venezuela’s captain once again played the full 90’ in the final which was settled by Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s first-half strike in Suwon.

Captaining the side to victories over Germany, Vanuatu, Mexico, Japan and Uruguay, Herrera has been the key player in the Vintotinto midfield throughout.

Calvert-Lewin’s winning goal in the final arrived in the 35th minute from close range after ‘keeper Wuilker Farinez had blocked the Everton forward’s initial strike.

England no.1 Freddie Woodman made two huge saves in the second half to deny Venezuela a way back into the match, a one-on-one stop from Sergio Cordova and another from the penalty spot from Adalberto Perananda.

It was a close game with chances at both ends and Venezuela could feel slightly hard done by that they didn’t manage to find an equalizer to at least take the game to extratime.

Everyone at New York City FC would like to congratulate Herrera on leading his country to the final and for his excellent performances throughout the tournament, earning him the Bronze Ball.

The 19-year old will now return to New York City to continue the 2017 MLS season which he has started with five appearances, one goal and one assist.
