David Villa Earns Spain Recall

Spain boss opens door for Villa recall

Spain’s record goalscorer is back with his national team...

Earning his first call-up since joining NYCFC in 2015, David Villa has been named to Spain’s squad for their upcoming UEFA World Cup qualifiers against Italy on Sept. 2 and at Liechtenstein on Sept. 5.

The 2016 MLS MVP and current leading scorer in MLS with 19 goals played his last game for La Rojas at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Villa took to Twitter to share his excitement at the news, confirming that he will accept the call.

He said: “Very excited. Thanks to those who trust in me to put me back this shirt.”

In total, Villa has scored 59 goals in 97 appearances for Spain, lifting FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship trophies in 2010 and 2008 respectively.

He joins up with a Spain side who are currently joint-top of their UEFA World Cup Qualifying group through six of ten games.

Villa will hope to celebrate this news tonight at Red Bull Arena where NYCFC faces Red Bulls in the final Hudson River Derby of the Regular Season.

Everyone at New York City FC would like to congratulate David on this deserved recall and wish him all of the very best for the games against Italy and Liechtenstein.
