Five Points | NYC Marches on to Open Cup Quarters

It was a dominant performance from New York City’s Football Club last night in the nation’s capital vs. D.C. United in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. The Boys in Blue secured the 2-1 victory after going down an early goal to Wayne Rooney and the Black & Red.

Clicking Up Front

It was all out attack from the jump at Audi Field on Wednesday evening. Dome’s lineup was laced with firepower, seeing an attacking corps of Héber, Mitriță, Tajouri-Shradi, and Maxi Moralez take aim at Chris Seitz’s goal from the go.

Despite controlling the action and having a few good looks at goal, it was England’s all-time leading scorer who broke the deadlock with a tidy finish against the run of play to put D.C. up one on this knockout night in The District.

But it was only a matter of time until the chances were converted. Six minutes after Roo’s goal, Keaton Parks found Mitri in acres of space to dribble in on goal and equalize. Three minutes after that, Isi repeated the feat by tucking one away of his own.

The Blues continued to click in attack even as Héber had to be replaced by Taty Castellanos early in the second half.

No matter who is in motion, NYC’s attack surely looks one to be feared for the rest of the season.

Stuver Saves

Two starts and two wins on the trot for big Brad Stuver and NYCFC in the 2019 U.S. Open Cup.

Brad bounced back incredibly from the frustration that Rooney’s goal must have provided, making numerous big saves throughout the match to thwart whatever chances D.C. thought they had.

Cup Dreams

In his post-match, Brad said it best. The team is focused on this Open Cup run, for a Club that is hungry for a first piece of first-team silverware and a chance to test their mettle against the best in CONCACAF.
