The XI: Nine Changes for Open Cup Derby

The XI Red Bulls Open Cup

Head Coach Patrick Vieira has shuffled his pack for New York City FC’s US Open Cup fourth round clash at Red Bull Arena.

Tommy McNamara and Ebenezer Ofori are retained in the XI from Saturday’s 3-0 win over Orlando and they’re joined by nine different faces for this midweek matchup.

In net, Brad Stuver makes his competitive debut for the Boys in Blue, replacing Sean Johnson, while, at the back, Cedric Hountondji makes his first-ever start for City.

Hountondji is joined by the returning Maxime Chanot and Ben Sweat as part of a back three, with Saad Abdul-Salaam and Jonathan Lewis providing the width.

In the center of midfield, Kwame Awuah makes his first competitive start for NYCFC alongside Ofori and McNamara, while Jesus Medina and David Villa at the apex of the XI.

City are looking to reach the fifth round of the US Open Cup for the first time in Club history, returning to the venue where Danny Royer’s goal knocked out NYCFC in 2017.

It’s the second visit to Harrison this season following our defeat there in May, meaning Vieira and co. will be out for a measure of revenge in this knockout match.

If the scores are level after 90’, 30 minutes of extratime will be played, with penalties to follow if no winner is determined.
