NYCFC Academy Teams Prepare for Generation adidas Cup Qualifiers

NYCFC U16s GA Cup

New York City FC U-15s and U-17s are both back in Generation adidas Cup action this weekend in Georgia.

Following two games of preliminary qualifying which took place before Christmas, both sides are in contention to qualify for the Championship Division in Frisco ahead of this batch of qualifiers.

NYCFC will lock horns with Red Bulls, DC United and Philadelphia at U-15 and U-17 level between Friday and Saturday.

The U-17s go into the weekend's East Region play in fourth position out of seven with a W2-D0-L1 record, while our U-15s also resume in fourth place with a W1-D1-L0 record.

This is, of course, a significant competition for NYCFC, thanks to last year's Generation adidas Cup triumph in Frisco which was achieved by a squad which included Joe Scally, Justin Haak, Gio Reyna, who have all played a part on the first-team's preseason to date.

We'll let you know how both of our teams fare at Atlanta United's Training Center on Monday here on NYCFC.com.

The Generation adidas Cup was founded in 2007 at the U-17 level, emphasizing player development while providing elite competition for MLS academies. Since then, the competition has built prestige as a premier youth tournament featuring the best clubs from around the world.

GA Cup participants are split into three qualifying regions — East, Central, West — with teams squaring off at least once in a round-robin for a total of six matches. The top two finishers in each region will advance to the Championship Division for the 2018 Generation adidas Cup proper in Frisco. Those clubs will be joined by top international talent as they battle for the Generation adidas Cup crown.

MLS teams that fail to earn a top-two finish in qualifying will compete in the Premier Division, with those matches taking place concurrently with Championship Division fixtures in Frisco.

U-17 qualifying matches will unfold with two 40-minute halves, and three points will go to the victor. In the event of a draw, both teams will earn one point and an extra point will be decided via penalty kicks. U-15 matches will be played in two 35-minute halves.
