Welcome to another deep dive into the headlines concerning New York City FC from the past seven days.
There’s a lot to get through in this latest compendium of pixelated and printed news stories, so let’s kick off with some opinion pieces coming out of our 2-0 win in La La Land.
We begin with a piece by Will Parchman on Top Drawer Soccer who puts forward the notion that: “we have all been sleeping dangerously on Jonathan Lewis.”
The Rookie netted his first MLS goal at the StubHub Center last weekend and Parchman believes it’s time to start paying the Akron alum some more attention.
The article tees it up: “He was the final addition to this particular GA class, and he was probably the least known in national terms.
“He had a stellar freshman campaign with Akron, but his best position on the next level wasn’t all that obvious, and he was just a freshman after all. They rarely make GA lists these days. And so we slept.
“Lewis was probably the least ballyhooed of the current GA crop, and his playing time with NYCFC seemed to be confirmation of that fact.
“He played just 23 minutes in NYCFC’s first 20 games, despite the fact that they desperately needed width at times over that span. And then, on July 22, a breakthrough in his first career start…”

It was a great goal by Lewis against Galaxy but the celebration? Not so much.
The winger joked after the game on the subject of his botched knee slide celebration with the New York Post’s Kyle Schnitzer.
Lewis said: “I knew I wanted to do a knee slide. That’s been a dream of mine when I scored my first professional goal to do a knee slide. It didn’t come off nice though. It was pretty bad actually.”
Let’s hope he gets another chance on Sunday when New England Revolution come to town…
Another man who drew praise for his performance in California was human brick wall, Sean Johnson.
The NYCFC goalkeeper’s tour de force performance is analyzed by ESPN FC’s Arch Bell in a roundup of the league’s Heroes and Villains.
The story reads: It was a move that flew under the radar over the winter, but Sean Johnson's arrival to New York City FC has been one of the main reasons why Patrick Vieira's team is in the hunt for top spot in the East; four points back of leaders Toronto FC.
“He stood very tall with a spectacular multiple-save performance in Saturday's 2-0 win over the L.A. Galaxy. NYCFC has a rock in goal.”
