Yangel Captains Venezuela U20 to Quarterfinals for First Time

NYCFC's Yangel Herrera headed Venezuela to a historic U20 World Cup 2017 quarterfinal in Korea this morning.

After a hard-fought game that led to extra time, Yangel scored the loan goal against Japan U20s in the round of 16 to book Venezuela into the last eight for the first time.

Loa Vinotintos were perfect in the group stage with three wins and no goals conceded but couldn't break past the Japanese and were forced into extra time.

The winning goal came in the 108th minute when Yangel rose in the penalty area and headed a Ronaldo Lecena corner past Ryosuke Kojima, earning his team their place in the last eight, and the history books.

Portugal also advanced to the quarterfinals after knocking out hosts South Korea 3-1 in the round of 16 on Tuesday.

Up next, Yangel and his team will face either USA or New Zealand on Sunday, June 4 at 2:00am.
