Saves: Five of the Best

Top Five Saves of 2016

It’s the goalkeepers’ time to shine in the latest top five from 2016.

We’ve looked at assists, funniest moments, screamers and tekkers… today, we look at the best saves made throughout the campaign.

Both starting ‘keepers have had chances to show their reflexes and agility over the last eight months but which five stops make the list?

In no particular order…

Saunders v Chicago

This one looks deceptively simple on first viewing but subsequent replays tell you that this was a great stop from Josh.

With the ball bending into the corner and coming through a sea of legs, it would have been easy to loose this one but Saunders watched it all of the way and turned it around the post.

Saunders v Dallas

In terms of importance, this one is right up there.

FC Dallas has broken through at Yankee Stadium with just seconds left on the clock.

It looked to all the world as if one point was going to slip through NYCFC’s fingers until Josh came up big with this stop, tipping the ball onto the post to secure an important draw against the eventual MLS Supporters’ Shield winners.

Johansen v Columbus

We rewind to the final day of the Regular Season when Eirik secured MLS Save of the Week with this stunning fingertip stop against Columbus.

It was the Norwegian’s first start for the club and he earned many plaudits for an accomplished performance but this save was definitely the highlight.

NYCFC went on to win 4-1 but it could have been very different without this…

Saunders v Portland

Our best win of the season? Maybe.

Again, it could have been a different story had Josh not come up big with this excellent save from Darlington Nagbe.

NYCFC came away with a 2-1 win on the defending champions’ home turf and every player played their part.

Especially Josh…

Saunders v DC United

Ex-NYCFC man Patrick Mullins must have thought he’d marked his return to Yankee Stadium with a goal when he burst through in first half stoppage tie.

The DC United striker was clear and looked to dink the ball over his former teammate but Josh had other ideas.
