New York City FC Players Help Wilmington Hammerheads Win

Andres Mendoza scored a penalty kick in the 88th minute as the Wilmington Hammerheads notched their first victory of the season with a 3-0 win over New York Red Bulls II on Sunday afternoon at Red Bull Arena.


The New York City FC defender and five teammates were loaned to the Club's USL affiliate for the match.


Mendoza, defender Connor Brandt and midfielders Kwadwo Poku, Pablo Alvarez, Tommy McNamara and Matt Dunn all saw action in the victory. Poku, Dunn, Mendoza and Alvarez started and played the full match. McNamara played 59 minutes, while Brandt was on the field for 34.

Nick Zimmerman scored twice in the first half for the Hammerheads, finding the back of the net in the 22nd and 43rd minutes.


In the match's waning minutes, Corben Bone was tackled in the box by Red Bulls II goalkeeper Santiago Castano, who was shown a red card. Mendoza powered home the penalty kick to seal the victory.


Wilmington goalkeeper Andre Rawls, who was drafted by New York City FC, had 10 saves in the victory.
