The Football Effect: Eddie of City in the Community

Students of City in the Community club in East Harlem share with us what they have been up to. The students have been focusing on playing soccer, working hard in school, attending their tutoring sessions and getting into healthy eating habits. Here is what 13-year-old City in the Community East Harlem club student Eddie has to share.

Grade? Eighth


What position do you play? Right back or Right midfield


Favorite soccer player? Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard


How did you get involved in City in the Community?

In fourth grade there was a soccer program in my school and when I joined I got closer to many coaches and players and later on I stayed with the team and it became bigger community.


How long have you been a part of this program?

About six years.


What do you usually do in the City in the Community program? (Soccer, Mentoring/Tutoring, Healthy lifestyle?)


I do soccer and tutoring.


Who is your soccer coach and what do you like about him?

My coach is Coach Barry and what I like about him is he's always positive.


Who is your tutor and how helpful has she been to you?

My tutor is Gazelle and she really helped get my grades up and she made school easier for me.


Run us through your typical week of what you do with City Soccer.

I have practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, tutoring on Friday at the Saturday Night Lights program and weekend games.


What do you like most about City in the Community?

What I like about City in the Community is that it helps me become a better soccer player. It also helps me become a good person in general. They have many things that I can get into, such as tutoring and other things. Also there are players who work hard and want to become better.


What do you look forward to the most about New York City FC’s inaugural season and why?

I'm really excited about the New York City Football Club season because it's going to be their first time in Major League Soccer and I'm looking forward to seeing David Villa scoring goals because it will help the team win a lot of games and possibly the MLS Cup.
