Player Watch: Villa Evens the Score for Melbourne City in Sydney

With FIFA international dates the focus of the weekend in football, most of New York City FC's loanees had the weekend off from competitive club commitments. However, one very decorated former Spanish international played his first competitive minutes since this summer's World Cup in Brazil


David Villa made his Melbourne City debut in stunning fashion on Saturday, coming off the bench to score the all important equalizer away to Sydney FC in the opening match of the season.

In addition to Villa continuing his club scoring exploits outside of Spain's La Liga, Frank Lampard has picked up some recognition for doing what he has always done in the Premier League, score goals.


Super Frank was voted Manchester City's Etihad Player of the Month for September after scoring goals against Chelsea, Sheffield Wednesday, and Hull City to annoucne his arrival in sky blue.


To bag the award in his first full month for the club is a testament to one of the Premier League's greatest ever midfielders longevity, and he will no doubt continue to contribute to the defending champions ahead of moving back to New York City to spearhead the club's inaugural season.


Back on American soil in the NASL, Josh Saunders kept a clean sheet in San Antonio Scorpion's 7-0 thumping of the Tampa Bay Rowdies to clinch a playoff birth with his current team in Texas.
