2019: The Costa Rican played and started in 24 matches and scored a goal and recorded an assist on the way. Now NYCFC's longest-serving player, Matarrita continues to be a crucial piece in the squad, putting an injury-hit 2018 behind him to lock up the left-back slot for much of the 2019 season.
2018: Ronald Matarrita unfortunately missed out on the 2018 World Cup due to an injury early in Costa Rica’s training camp. From that point, it was rehabilitation to get ready for NYCFC’s fourth campaign. The versatile left-sided player came back strong, earning 15 starts in 24 games, scoring two goals and logging two assists for NYCFC on the way to his third straight appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
2017: Ronald Matarrita had a successful 2017 despite a lengthy injury layoff, helping Costa Rica secure a 2018 World Cup berth and providing constant danger down the left wing for NYCFC when healthy. In eight starts, Matarrita contributed three assists and contributed his fair share of defensive work.
2016: Costa Rican fullback Ronald Matarrita was named NYCFC’s Defensive Player of the Year at the end of 2016, following a tremendous season. Now one of the first names on Patrick Vieira’s teamsheet, Ronald played 27 games in 2016, assisting five and scoring one goal. “Mata” also enjoyed a great year at international level, scoring against Trinidad and Tobago in the Hexagonal series of FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November.

Matarrita is a mainstay defender in the Costa Rican National Team set up, having progressed from the U-17 level in 2010 to the first-team in 2015. Mata helped Los Ticos through to the Hexagonal section of FIFA World Cup 2018 qualifying and scored against Trinidad & Tobago in November 2016.
