Villa Reaction Philly

Reigning MLS MVP David Villa scored one of the greatest goals of his long and storied career in New York City FC’s 2-0 win over Philadelphia Union on Friday night.

The 53.5 yard volley, the furthest-out a goal has been scored in MLS since data sets have been kept by ESPN, was scored in the 90th minute to clinch NYCFC’s first road win of 2017.

Under pressure from two Philadelphia defenders, David found himself a yard of space before unleashing a miracle strike which arced over Andre Blake’s head and nestled into the net.

It was a strike worthy of winning any game but David explains that he only tried the shot because he was tired at that late stage of the game.

Villa reflected: “It’s difficult – I was a little bit tired from running so I just tried it and it went in.”

The Spain national team’s record goalscorer has now scored four goals in six games in 2017 and NYCFC have a record of 3-2-1 for the season following the victory.

It reversed the 2-0 defeat suffered at the Talen Energy Stadium last year and gave Patrick Vieira’s men a first road win of the year.

Villa explained: “It was a great game for us we played so well, better than the last game.

“I think we controlled the game, we created chances and we deserve to be winning in this moment. With the goal from Jack. We played so well from the back, we controlled it well and the three points is really amazing for us.”

After defeats to Orlando and DC United on the road, Villa felt it was important to get back to winning ways away from Yankee Stadium.

He added: “It was important – we need to be strong in Yankee Stadium to be good and to take points away. More than ever, against a rival like Philadelphia in our conference.”
