Spotlight: Sean Johnson vs. New England

SJ NE Revs

Not for the first time this season, Sean Johnson brought his A-game in Sunday night’s clash with New England.

Although it wasn’t enough to earn NYCFC at least a share of the points, it was yet another stellar showing from the goalkeeper and it was enough to earn him the NYCFC.com Man of the Match honors.

Following Jack Harrison’s sending-off on 26’, the Boys in Blue were forced to endure some serious pressure as one of the East’s strongest home sides knocked on the door.

Making a terrific save on the stroke of half-time, Johnson kept his team in the game until the breakthrough on 51’ which came via an unstoppable deflected strike from Diego Fagundez.

At 1-0, Johnson really came into his own, seizing upon strike after strike to keep NYC in range right up until the game-clincher in the second minute of stoppage-time.

Calling to mind his brick wall impression against LA Galaxy, Sean made nine saves in total over the course of 90’ and also made a number of excellent claims to relieve pressure on his side.

Key Moment

NYCFC were pushing for an equalizer and committing men forward in the 78th minute when Kei Kamara burst through and looked favorite to score but there was Johnson to make the big kick save.

Although ultimately it was only delaying what was to follow, it was a better save than it appeared on first glance as Sean was going the other way before adjusting his feet and making the block.
