New York City FC vs. Portland Timbers: Spotlight on Javier Calle

Javier Calle vs. Portland Timbers

Javier Calle has seen an increased role with New York City FC recently.

The 24-year-old Colombian has started the Club's last two matches at left back. Calle, who was signed on a season-long loan from Independiente Medellín on Feb. 6, has played more minutes in the past two matches (168) than he did in his prior four appearances for the club (97 minutes).

Calle has provided New York City FC with a barrage of crosses from the left side. In the Club's 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union on April 16, Calle served up 11 crosses. This past Sunday, he had 12 crosses and was named the Heineken Star of the Match in the 1-0 defeat to the Portland Timbers.

Here's a look at his day in statistics, video, photos, quotes and more.

By the Numbers

  • Had 12 crosses in Sunday's match
  • Made his third start (second straight) against Timbers
  • Has 23 crosses in past two matches

Calle said

"My confidence is much better. I am picking up a bit more of the team’s rhythm. In any case, we have to work harder every day and prove why we’re here. We want to bring joy to the fans that come here and support us."

Sebastian Velasquez said

"I’m happy for him because he’s like my brother. The relationship we have off the field I feel it on the field. I wish him the best every game."
