In the first-ever meeting between the teams in the same round a year ago at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium, the Cosmos advanced via penalty kicks following a thrilling encounter.

Kwadwo Poku staked NYCFC to a 2-0 lead with a goal in each half, but the Cosmos rallied to tie the game in the 90th minute before prevailing in PKs, winning the shootout, 4-3.

Poku is no stranger to U.S. Open Cup success, scoring the late winner for the Atlanta Silverbacks in a fourth round win over Real Salt Lake in 2014. In 2013, he netted a hat trick in the Georgia Revolution’s 4-3 win over Real Colorado Foxes in the first round of the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States.
The Cosmos are the defending North American Soccer League champions, finishing second to Indy Eleven in the league’s recently completed spring season.

The winner advances to the Round of 16. The draw will take place June 16.
NYCFC remains in the Bronx to face the Philadelphia Union Saturday at 1 p.m. at Yankee Stadium.
