How they lined up …
Patrick Vieira made five changes to the side that dramatically defeated D.C. United, 3-2, on Sept. 1. The back four was almost completely altered from that match with Ronald Matarrita, back from international duty, returning at left back, Jefferson Mena and Frederick the central pairing and Jason Hernandez starting at right back.
Federico Bravo earned his first start since May 21 in place of Andoni Iraola as the holding midfielder and Steven Mendoza was rewarded for his recent run of form and given the start on the left side of the three-man front line.

Vieira made a halftime substitution for the second straight game, bringing on RJ Allen for Jason Hernandez and made his final two changes in the 63rd minute as Tony Taylor came on for David Villa and Khiry Shelton replaced Jefferson Mena as NYCFC switched to three in the back.

Man of the Match …
Frank Lampard

The veteran midfielder continued his hot streak with his 12th goal of the season and seventh in the last seven games in the 49th minute, finishing a nice buildup that ended with RJ Allen playing an angled pass deep into the box that Lampard finished clinically.

Key moment …

Frank Lampard came out of halftime and cut NYCFC’s deficit to one goal in the 49th minute. Ronald Matarrita started the sequence with a bombing run down the left. Andrea Pirlo pivoted in midfield before slotting to RJ Allen on the right. Allen played the ball on the ground to Lampard, who hammered home from the edge of the six-yard box.
