Quick Read

New York City II claimed a first win of the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season, defeating Atlanta United 2. Justin Haak and Andres Jasson were on target at Belson Stadium with a goal in each half to set Matt Pilkington's side up and running in the new campaign with a 2-0 victory.

Match Recap

The City Boys welcomed the newly inaugurated Five Stripes side for our home opener, looking to bounce back from last weekend's opening day defeat to New England Revolution.

Head Coach Pilkington named another strong side, making four changes to the XI that traveled to Gillette Stadium, as three first-team players started: Jasson, Haak, and goalkeeper Matt Freese, who made his Club debut.

It would take just eight minutes for the senior stars to make an impact. Pressing high, City won the ball back down the left flank with Jack Beer and Jasson combining well, squaring for Haak to slot home.

A dominant performance saw the hosts carve plenty of chances, but the Boys in Blue would have to wait until the 77th minute to double the advantage.

Once again, NYCFC regained possession – this time in the center circle with Haak’s interception. The midfielder found Jonathan Jiménez, who drove into the box and crossed for Jasson to convert from close range to seal the points, and a first clean sheet of the season.

Match Highlights

Matt Pilkington:

“It was a good performance all around. Obviously, we have some First Team guys come down, and they helped with the intensity and the quality. They really took it the right way and held the group, so overall, the performance was good, and I was really happy with it.

“The mentality, approach, and clean sheet could help to build on future performances. As far as the win, it is good to get three points. We had a really good preseason, and we were excited to get the season started and get some matches under our belt, so I thought we deserved the three points, and it was overall a very pleasing performance.”
