Frank Lampard Wins MLS Player of the Week

New York City FC midfielder Frank Lampard was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the 21st week of the 2016 MLS season.


The midfielder made NYCFC history in Saturday’s 5-1 win over the Colorado Rapids at Yankee Stadium, scoring the first hat trick in Club history. Lampard now has eight goals and one assist on the season, all in the last eight games, with NYCFC compiling a 6-2-0 record over that period. NYCFC currently sits atop the Eastern Conference standings (36 points, 10-7-6), and is now riding a three-game home win streak after snapping Colorado's league-best 15-match unbeaten run.

Lampard opened his account in the 25th minute off a beautiful sequence starting with a wonderful dummy from Andrea Pirlo which allowed defender Diego Martinez to send a dangerous cross inside the box. Midfielder Tommy McNamara got a touch to it, flicking it on to the far post where Lampard easily finished past Colorado goalkeeper Tim Howard to give NYCFC a 1-0 advantage. (embed goal).


Lampard then scored his second of the match in the 81st minute as Jack Harrison set him up inside the penalty area, resulting in an upper 90 finish from the Englishman and a 4-0 lead. The goal is one of eight nominated for AT&T MLS Goal of the Week
Lampard completed his hat trick with a penalty kick in the 85th minute, sending a right-footed shot past a diving Howard to put NYCFC up 5-0. 
New York City FC next faces the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium in Viernes de Futbol action on Friday, August 5 (11 p.m. ET, UniMas).
