In Manchester, an inspirational group of Young Leaders are working hard to promote female empowerment through the City Girls project.

Many would say Manchester is the home of soccer. Thousands of young people take part in soccer activities every week, but historically girls stop playing in their teenage years due to the lack of provision available to them.

For the past two years, Young Leaders have been tackling this by providing free weekly soccer sessions for over 900 girls across the city, to keep them playing soccer and continue growing their love for the game.

Inspired by the rising profile of the professional women’s game and grassroots development, Libbie and other female Young Leaders in Manchester want to empower even more girls and young women to step onto the pitch, encouraging them to develop their soccer skills and build their confidence in an inclusive and fun environment.

For Libbie, 16, it is about being a strong female leader and demonstrating to each young girl that they can grow up to achieve anything they put their mind to.

“I have played football for as long as I can remember. Through City Girls, we want to get more and more girls playing football, coaching football, and we want the girls to benefit from all the things that football can bring to them.

“There are so many role models out there now: who are female players, female coaches and I want to be one of those female role models for someone and nobody is going to tell me that I can't do it, when I can.”

This project is delivered by Manchester City’s Foundation, City in the Community, and generously supported by SAP.
