New York City FC at Puerto Rico: Recap

Bayamón, Puerto Rico – New York City FC defeated the Puerto Rico National team 2-1 on Friday night.


Kwadwo Poku muscled past the defender and put it past the goalkeeper to score the game-winning goal in the 91st minute.


New York City FC jumped out to an early lead in the 7th minute, when Puerto Rico scored an own goal off an R.J. Allen cross.


Puerto Rico countered in the second half with an own goal in the 66th minute. 



New York City FC’s captain David Villa blasted a shot in the third minute but was stopped by Puerto Rico goalkeeper Matthew Sanchez. Sanchez denied Villa again in the 13th minute. In the 23rd minute Villa rocketed a shot that was deflected and hit the crossbar.


At the end of the first half, New York City FC goalkeeper Josh Saunders made three crucial saves to give New York City FC the lead going into the second half.

In the second half after the game was knotted up, Puerto Rico scored two goals: however, both were called back because of an offside.


In the 91st minute Poku pushed his way past a defender and sealed the victory for New York City FC.


7,850 fans came out to Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium. For the Club it concluded a week long trip in Puerto Rico.
