New York City Football Club hosts D.C. United on Saturday night.

For this edition of 'The Away End' presented by Berkeley College & Rennert International, we spoke to Dave Johnson, a member of D.C. United's broadcast team since 1996.

Hi Dave, thanks for speaking with us. How long have you been covering D.C. United?

I've been covering D.C. United since day one. I emceed the introductory press conference in the Fall of 1995.

What would you describe as your highlight during that time?

That's a very tough question, but I will go with the opening game at Audi Field. To have our own home, with Wayne Rooney on the team, was a very emotional moment considering how far we had come as a soccer nation.

How do you reflect on the 2023 season for D.C. United?

It was a season of missed opportunity. I believed United had the talent to be a playoff team.

What are your hopes for the 2024 season for D.C. United?

I think qualifying for the playoffs. I believe United is already showing it belongs there. Recording four draws from four road games is significant. The players have bought into Troy Lesesne's exciting high-press style.

What do you think could be the deciding factor between the two teams on Saturday?

I think what will be decisive is United's ability to impose its will despite the absence of Mateusz Klich and Aaron Herrera due to yellow card accumulation.

For any of our fans who might be in D.C. for a game soon, are there any places you'd suggest they check out before the match?

I'd suggest Bluejacket Brewery. It has great beer, lots of atmosphere, and it's a 10-minute walk to the stadium.
